Beyond Bullets and Scribbles - Visual Note taking with iPad
Saturday November 23, 2024 9:45am - 10:35am GMT+08
I have always been astonished by how people can create beautiful and functional notes on iPads. The real benefit of visual notes lies in their ability to reinforce learning, encourage creativity, and help in encoding and decoding large amounts of text. They push students to think critically and creatively while encoding their notes. As both a teacher and a learner, I am continually amazed by the advantages visual note-taking can bring to the classroom. When I first explored workshops and books on this topic, I found the abundance of jargon and detailed instructions intimidating. My initial thought was, "I'm not an artist; I might not be able to do this." However, I couldn't let this idea die. The potential benefits gave me hope, so I pursued it further and discovered that it's actually quite an easy task. I realized that people often overcomplicate it unnecessarily. This session is designed for our school teachers and students to share the simplicity and effectiveness of visual note-taking. We've already seen great results using Freeform, and I am excited to demonstrate how note-taking can transform learning and help students express themselves.

Objectives:
Understand the benefits of visual note-taking for reinforcing learning and enhancing creativity. Learn practical techniques for creating visually engaging and informative notes using the iPad. Explore the use of Freeform and other apps to simplify the note-taking process. Develop confidence in creating and using visual notes to express ideas and knowledge creatively.

Digital Boundaries that Enhance Digital Learning
Saturday November 23, 2024 9:45am - 10:35am GMT+08
The purpose of this session is to explore a range of tools, apps, and strategies that can be effectively implemented by both teachers and students to support digital citizenship and establish boundaries in the digital space. Often, the concepts of creating digital boundaries and utilizing educational technology are perceived as mutually exclusive. In this session, the presenter will share anecdotal experiences demonstrating how establishing boundaries in the digital space can lead to positive outcomes for both educators and learners. The core idea behind "Digital Boundaries that Enhance Digital Learning" is to empower teachers and students to leverage technology in a way that aligns with their individual needs and schedules, ultimately enhancing the learning experience. The powerful devices we use, such as iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks, have the potential to either foster community and wellbeing or contribute to isolation and challenge mental health. As educators, we have the opportunity to model healthy digital citizenship for our students. By setting boundaries around aspects of "screen time" that can negatively impact health and happiness, we can harness the life-changing capabilities of these devices to enhance educational outcomes.

Verse to Visual: Using AI to Transform Lyrics into Art
Saturday November 23, 2024 9:45am - 10:35am GMT+08
A fun way to introduce students to AI image generators is to have them visualise their favourite song’s lyrics. By closely examining the song's themes and messages, students can learn to prompt and refine AI tools to create artwork that reflects their interpretation of the music. This process not only helps students understand how media can convey meaning but also empowers them to express their own ideas creatively through their own art. This workshop will guide teachers on how to incorporate AI image generators into their classrooms to enhance student creativity and understanding of media. Participants will learn how to analyse song lyrics, prompt AI tools effectively, and refine generated images to create thematic representations of their chosen songs. Application of this concept can extend to writing, reading, social studies, units of inquiry, and more.

Transdiscipliary Learning and Digital Wellbeing using iPad
Saturday November 23, 2024 10:50am - 11:40am GMT+08
The session highlights the use of iPads as a versatile tool to foster transdisciplinary education while supporting healthy digital habits. Transdisciplinary learning involves integrating knowledge and approaches from multiple disciplines to address complex, real-world challenges. With iPads, students can access a wide range of apps and resources that promote collaboration between subjects such as science, art, technology, and more. For example, students might use design apps to explore artistic principles while applying mathematical concepts or research tools to investigate scientific problems through a historical lens. iPads enable personalized learning experiences, allowing students to explore subjects in ways that resonate with their interests and skills. They can engage with interactive simulations, digital textbooks, and multimedia content that bridge disciplinary gaps and encourage creative problem-solving. In terms of digital wellbeing, iPads offer tools to manage screen time, promote mindfulness, and foster Digital Citizenship skills in students. By using iPads to promote transdisciplinary learning and digital wellbeing, educators can create a balanced, innovative learning ecosystem that equips students with both knowledge and the skills to navigate the digital world in a responsible manner.

Adventures with AI in the History Classroom
Saturday November 23, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm GMT+08
History is often the last classroom that is transformed by technology. Rather than the boring old lecture, what if we used generative AI to create art? Suddenly every student in the class can produce a high quality political cartoon or a propaganda poster. Could we spend less time developing the content in lectures and more time making it interactive? Of course, if we outsource the slide creation to genAI. This workshop will highlight some of the ideas I've found useful and help teachers stay away from some of the mistakes I've made.

Applying Computational Action in Project Work to Enhance Student Learning and Motivation
Saturday November 23, 2024 2:40pm - 3:30pm GMT+08
EAL
Project work has long been used in K-12 computing education curricula to develop students' computational thinking skills through applied learning. However, it is not enough for students to solve abstract problems with which they feel little connection. We has taken a further step to incorporate computational action into a coursework project by giving students the agency to choose a project title that is connected to their personal interests and is meaningful to them. This approach allows students to experience the role of a software developer or AI engineer, and feel empowered about their ability to make a difference in the world through their skills and knowledge, in turn increasing their motivation to learn more. In this session, hear about our journey to infuse computational action into our project work, the impact it has made to our students, and how you can implement computational action into your programmes too.

Using Technology to Measure and Respond to Student Wellbeing in a Primary Setting
Sunday November 24, 2024 9:45am - 10:35am GMT+08
This workshop will explore how technology can be leveraged to track, assess, and support the wellbeing of students in a primary school setting. At the core of our approach is the integration of various data points, including attendance records, daily wellbeing check-ins, pastoral review meetings, and nurse visit logs. Together, these elements provide a holistic view of each student's physical, emotional, and mental health. We will delve into how daily wellbeing check-ins allow students to self-report their emotions, and how these insights help staff to identify patterns and potential areas of concern. By combining these findings with attendance data and pastoral reviews, schools can proactively identify students who may need additional support. Additionally, we’ll examine the importance of teaching emotional literacy, equipping students with the skills to better understand and communicate their feelings. The session will provide practical insights into the tools used, the workflow of collecting and analysing data, and how timely interventions can be planned to ensure students thrive both academically and emotionally.

Sunday November 24, 2024 1:35pm - 2:25pm GMT+08
The session focuses on innovative teaching strategies through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) using numbers to engage diverse learners. The main themes include:
  1. Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The session emphasizes the importance of addressing the unique needs of every learner, catering to different educational backgrounds, attention spans, interests, language abilities, and cultural contexts
  2. Engagement through Creative Methods: Participants explore how to make data-driven learning more interactive by using visually appealing templates and customizable formats, such as incorporating min-maps, quiz, storyboarding, gamification to cater to diverse audiences.
  3. Interactive Learning Tools: Teachers are encouraged to provide multiple modes of expression, allowing students to present their learning in various ways, such as writing, audio explanations, digital stories, and quizzes.
  4. Hands-on Activities: The sessions involve practical activities where educators can create simple yet effective lessons using conditional formatting, drawing tools, and custom worksheets to engage learners at all levels. A practical session invites participants to create numbers-based activities for teaching history.
The session aims to develop future training sessions that integrate UDL with creative engagement techniques to empower educators in fostering diverse learning environments.
